The New England Patriots are a professional American football team based in the Greater Boston area. They compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member team of the league's American Football Conference (AFC) East division. They began play in 1960 as the Boston Patriots, a charter member of the American Football League, and became an NFL franchise after the completion of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.
