Jess Cauthorn (1923-2005) was an American artist and graphic designer best known for his watercolor paintings and advertising designs, including designs for Rainier Beer, Darigold, and Seattle Transit. After serving time in World War II, where he was awarded a Purple Heart, Cauthorn returned to his birthplace in Seattle, Washington. He studied at the Burnley School of Professional Art and bought the school from Edwin Burnley in 1959. The school was run and owned privately by Cauthorn and his wife until 1982, when they sold the school to the Education Management Corporation and the school’s name became The Art Institute of Seattle. Cauthorn was a member of the American Watercolor Society, Puget Sound Group of Northwest Artists, and the Northwest Watercolor Society. His artwork is in a permanent collection at the Frye Art Museum, Washington State University (previously at the Seattle Art Museum) and the National Infantry Museum in Fort Benning, Georgia.
