The 2016-17 NHL season was the 100th season of operation (99th season of play) of the National Hockey League (NHL). On June 11, the Pittsburgh Penguins became the first team to repeat as Stanley Cup champions since the Detroit Red Wings in 1997-98, winning the franchise's fifth Stanley Cup and their third in nine seasons.
