The Columbus Clippers are a Minor League Baseball team of the International League (IL) and the Triple-A affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians. They are located in Columbus, Ohio, and are named for speedy merchant sailing vessels known as clippers.
The franchise began in 1955 as the Columbus Jets. The Jets franchise folded in 1969 and were purchased and moved to Charleston, West Virginia, where they became the Charleston Charlies. The franchise was returned by their then-parent club, the Pittsburgh Pirates, in 1977 as the Columbus Clippers. A new franchise was relocated to Charleston and assumed the Charlies name.
