The Big East Conference is a collegiate athletic conference that competes in NCAA Division I in all sports except college football, which is not sponsored. The conference has been officially recognized as a Division I multi-sport conference since 2013.
In 2013 the original Big East splintered between football and non-football schools. The non-football teams retained the rights to the Big East name and history, while the football teams reformed as the American Athletic Conference. Both conferences share a common history and lineage from 1979 through 2013.
