The 1939-40 NBL season was the inaugural season of the National Basketball League, which merged with the Basketball Association of America (BAA) in 1949 to create the National Basketball Association (NBA). There were eight teams in the league, split into Eastern and Western divisions. The postseason consisted of a semifinal round and a championship round. The Oshkosh All-Stars were league champions.
