The Los Angeles Lakers are a professional basketball team in the National Basketball Association, based out of Los Angeles, California. They began play in 1947 as the Detroit Gems of the short-lived Professional Basketball League of America. When the league folded the rights to the Gems were purchased and the franchise was moved to Minnesota. The rechristened Minneapolis Lakers joined the National Basketball League and won the 1947-48 league championship.
The Lakers quit the NBL in 1948 and switched to the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The BAA and NBL merged in 1949 to form the National Basketball Association, making the Lakers a charter NBA franchise. The Lakers moved to Los Angeles in 1960.
