This week’s flashback highlights an early game in the historic rivalry between SMU and TCU, aka the Battle for the Iron Skillet. Actually, this game predates the skillet but we’ll go with it anyway.

The Mustangs were riding a four-game win streak in the series heading into the 1928 matchup at Ownby Stadium (which was just a few years old at the time).

The two teams met on November 29, Thanksgiving Day. Here is the program from the game.

SMU vs. TCU, 1928

TCU triumphed on a rain-soaked field, 15-6, behind the offensive tandem of QB Howard Grubbs and RB Austin Griffith. As a result of the win the Frogs finished the 1928 campaign with 8 totals wins, tied with Baylor for the most in the SWC. The conference title went to Texas however, with one more conference victory.
